Match report Round 15 – Midleton 29 - 26 Enniscorthy
This top of the table clash had everything it promised and more. Excellent rugby was on display from the get go as both teams tore into each other, resulting in a 9 try thriller and a 3 point winning margin for the home side, to keep Midleton top of the table in Division 2C.
Enniscorthy came into the match on a hot streak and getting some big scores, as seen in the number of try bonus points they had, 9 to our 5. With a strong, well organised pack and a dangerous backline, they had many attacking threats.
The first half had plenty to shout about with two trys and one conversion a piece for both teams to go in 12-12 at the break. Scorthy getting their second with only minutes left in the half, something they would repeat in the second.
The second half started just as quick for the home side with Aaron Leahy dotting down after hard work from outside the 22. Kyle Read added the extras. Only 5 minutes later the away side struck again, back to 19 all after 10 minutes. The next 15 was a real battle as both sides started to empty - the bench before the home side finishers showed their superior quality and Andrew Beyrooti dove over the ruck from short range.
A short time later Aaron Leahy went in for his second. The try started in Midleton’s half but a serious of good passes and off loads left Leahy raising for the line. One more was added to give us a lead of 5 trys to 4, Scorthy getting theirs in the final minutes to secure two bonus points. Midleton may come to rue letting them in at the end of the game but can be happy with a strong performance in all facets of play.
With only three games left Midleton are top of the table with 6 points to second placed Enniscorthy. There is a lot to play for but a two week break looms before we play three in a row starting with Ballyclare away on the 22nd of March. Our final home game of the season is on the 29th of March at home to Belfast Harelquins, who we drew against in the away fixture all the way back in October. This has the potential to be a huge game for the club so any and all support will be appreciated!
The final game of the season is away to Monkstown on the 4th of April, keep and eye out for travel details over coming weeks.
