U14 Match report
Midleton under 14 players sustained their winning their winning streak with a decisive win over Charleville.
Charleville came to Townspark with a strong team intent on repeating their victory over this team last year at under 13 level. However Midleton’s pack proved significantly stronger at the breakdown and comfortably controlled their own rucks, while forcing Charleville to retreat on many of theirs. Blake O’Keefe got the first try which was converted by Hugh Jeffery. Another try by Niall Higgins shortly after had Midleton ahead 10 to 0 at half time.
In the second half Midleton brought on all subs and after a little re-adjustment began to find their feet again after Charleville’s initial push after the break. Midleton’s forwards maintained their pressure and produced good ball for the backs. But Charleville’s defense were very fast off the break and manged to squash most of the Midleton’s backline running.
Another try from Midleton, this time from captain,Alex O’Brien, sealed the victory for Midleton. Charleville attempted to find holes out wide as the game drew to a close but good focused tackling by Daniel McGauran and others in the backline succeeded in keeping Cahrleville away from the try line. Toward the end of the game Charleville chose to kick a penalty from Midleton’s 20 metre line to put a score on the board.
Though one of Midleton’s best team performances the scoreline did not reflect Charleville’s strengths and it would not have been difficult to see Charleville getting a better score. That said Midleton always looked in control of this game.
Out thanks to Charleville and referee John Spillane.
