Navan 26 – Midleton 19
We travelled to Navan for the 3rd outing in the UBL expecting a tough encounter and that is exactly what we got. Navan started strong and soon had a try as a reward for early pressure. Missing the conversion Midleton were now 5 adrift. We brought pressure of our own to bear and by the 20th minute we were one ahead through the boot of the out-half Paul Daly. Attacking strongly now we were soon in a commanding position for a push over try. Almost 30 minutes in and Midleton were now ahead 11 to 5. Straight from the restart Navan pressured us again and within 2 minutes had their second try to see them edge ahead by one with the conversion. Undaunted, Midleton came back again and Jayde was in for our second try. The score at half time — Midleton 19 Navan 12.
The second half was a frustrating one for the Midleton men. 10 minutes in and Navan had their 3rd try of the day to tie the game and within another 5 minutes had a fourth. The score now Navan 26 Midleton 19.
Midleton piled on the pressure and at one point looked like scoring, camped on the opposition 5m line for a good period of time the Navan defence held and we came away empty handed.
The team will feel this is one we should have won but it wasn’t to be. A losing bonus point the consolation. 10 points from our first 3 games, two of them away is still a great achievement for the start of the season. A well earned break now for the lads before its back to action with a home game on the 1st of November when we host Old Crescent.
