The 1st team travelled to Cashel for the semi-final of the Charity Cup. In the space of 24 hours the weather swung from warm Autumn haze to a wintery, cold and wet day in Cashel!
While the weather may have been damp, the enthusiasm of the Midleton 1st team on their very first outing this season certainly was not. Cashel, with a number of games under their belts, started off with a bang, notching up an early try. This was followed by a penalty against Midleton before we replied with a penalty score of our own.
Our lack of match-time showed with Cashel running in another 2 Try’s; but then came the push with some well placed penalty kicks to the line from Geoff at number 10 and an overall great team effort to see one of our new players, Prop Jim McAssey push over for a try to keep Midleton in touch – 25 to 8 at the break. With the second half underway Cashel again ran in another try to bring the score to 32 to 8.
That proved to be the last score of the game as conditions worsened and the Midleton Defence came good with some string tackling and eventually holding up another try attempt from the home team with 10 minutes to go.
At the final whistle – Cashel 32, Midleton 8 – Despite the big difference in the final score, this young Midleton team grew into this game and retained their competitive spirit. While Cashel had a very settled and organised look about them, Midleton showed great character and courage as the game went on and will be a match for any one in their league.
