A little bit of history as we celebrate the 40th anniversary of the Midleton International Team………..
On Good Friday, 12th April 1974, Midleton RFC despatched an “International” team to play Jersey at home. This weekend marks the 40th Anniversary of that epic trip. Dan Lynch, the then proprietor of the Mill Wheel, bade the team a good journey as they departed and headed first to City Hall in Cork where they were received by the then Lord Mayor Pat Kerrigan for a reception prior to their trip. Flying from Cork to London, then onwards to Jersey, it was a first trip by air for many and the excitement was palpable.
Two “international” fixtures were held that weekend, with Tommy Foley captaining in the first game and John Levis in the second. The team ran out winners on both occasions, and gave Jersey their first defeat that season! There is one moment from the trip that many have recalled, and thats a particular try scored by the Midleton No7. Time has blurred the facts around how it was scored, suffice to say the actual event is now classed in folklore along with those in numbers who say they attended the Munster v All Blacks in 78…….
This was a trip where great bonds were formed, and the true meaning of team and club were evident. The social side of the occasion was not neglected either, the team had an hour in the mornings to relax, do some shopping and make sure the family presents were sorted, and in the evenings ended up as honorary members of Blimpers. a local night club! Overall a great trip and memorable occasion where the club and county were represented well. This weekend 18 of those men reunite to reminisce and share their stories, for one its also his Birthday (Con Walsh) and we wish him and his team mates many more.
